Amit could not believe it when he read the advertorial about the Deafness Camp at Saket City Hospital. It seemed to indicate that there was financial support available for cochlear implantation. He had already spent a few years trying to get financial support for this insanely expensive treatment that he needed for two of his three children. He had tried everything – Govt Hospitals, Prime ministers funds, name it and he had gone and spent a few weeks behind it. With no benefit. The answer was the same everywhere –no guarantees, implants cost several lacs.
In a family where everyone else was perfectly healthy, Amit and his wife were the only ones with 3 children – all totally deaf. One was already too old to be treated. He knew deafness can only be treated in childhood. If you grow up beyond 6-7 years, treatments don’t work because the brains ability to learn speech and language is lost. His two children needed cochlear implant surgery and rehabilitation afterwards. Implants cost 5.5 lacs, sugery cost 1.5 lacs and rehabilitation was 5-6000 per month. There was no way on earth he could conjure that kind of money. It was similar to asking him to buy the Taj Mahal. He could not even start to collect. His family earned out of business from a little shop. They lead a happy life but spending a few lacs was out of the question.
Looking at the advertorial, Amit started to day dream a bit, but his wife jolted him to reality saying that no hospital could possibly fund their needs. Cochlear Implantation is carried out only in select centers. There are very few surgeons who are trained to do the surgery. No one was going to help them. But Amit was going to give it a shot. He knew it when he saw the advert. And the smiling faces of little kids claiming their sibling had got the treatment at Saket City Hospital. It was a big hospital. Many super specialists with senior reputed surgeons worked there. The Cochlear Implant Program was led by Dr Shomeshwar Singh, an established name in the field. He checked the website and credentials and got doubly sure. He was going. What was there to lose?
The Sunday Clinic on deafness was like none he had ever seen before. The team of doctors were very welcoming and the whole process right from registering to evaluation including consultation was very organised. They asked him for income and ID proof which he was carrying and in a matter of minutes, he found Dr Shomeshwar Singh telling him that they were going to work up both his children for cochlear Implantation and surgery would be completed in less than a month. Before he knew it, CT and MRI Scans were already billed for. He had to pay nothing now and only the procedure cost at the time of surgery. Saket City Hospital was going to arrange funding for the Cochlear implant devices through their associations with Foundations with whom they work very closely.
Nothing was adding up. But the Doctor wasn’t lying. Amit found this out when his children underwent cochlear implant surgery a few weeks later. He could not believe it. But that was the truth. Thank God he did not listen to his wife that fateful sunday. She wasn’t wrong but he took the right decision. Her eyes were overflowing with tears of joy when Dr Shomeshwar Singh was telling her after surgery about how it went, how all electrodes of the cochlear implant device had been inserted and the post operative computer checks had confirmed in both the children that the hearing was restored. Post surgery rehabilitation was important to get the most from the technology but one thing was sure. Both the kids were going to rejoin mainstream schools. They were going to hear and they were going to speak. They did not need to learn sign language now. They did not need to go to special schools. That had changed forever. A modern new hospital in the heart of South Delhi – Saket City Hospital had changed their lives – forever.
